Writing as process

I don’t know if I agree with this. I enjoy writing, but what I really enjoy is goofing off. If my books could write themselves, I’d choose that option.

But it is true (for me) that only through the writing does the content come out. I don’t really know exactly what I want to say until I write it.

  1. How do I know what I think until I see what I say? was attributed to "a little girl" by Graham Wallas. Same or similar has been attributed to E.M. Forster.

Regardless of who may have said it first, it is often true.

  2. I have the same feeling. To go one step further, I believe in the process of creating Powerpoint (which is a heresy to some). I find that this process forces me to crystallize ideas and structure them.

  3. OH boy, This post resonates with me.

I just gave a presentation last Wednesday that I sweated blood over. But this time I created it direct in Tinderbox (www.eastgate.com) using the S3 slide show template.
It was better, much better, than PowerPoint for outlining and structuring – especially using map view and adornments. Good also that I could move stuff out of the actual presentation, but keep it in the file for later consideration.

But, I only really wrote it out when I decided had to start the PowerPoint :-(

I think next time I will keep a continuous text version in there too. Or write a abstract for every section first.

I did my screen shots from R of graphic outputs into PP Mac – but in PP 2000 Win they were not visible – just messages about getting quicktime.

So I had to borrow the Mac from my wife to actually run the presentation off.

Luckily it worked beautifully, selecting out the best resolution for the beamer automatically.

But – next time I will turn off the display option to alter the brightness according to ambient light. With it on the screen brightness shot up and down as my shadow from the big screen moved across the laptop (MBA).

Now I feel better. I had to tell someone ;-)

    Dave
