  1. There are missing versions of Matt, for instance Matthias is a very common name in Germany, in the top 10 (and in the top three in the 1980s, when my brother with that name was born).

  2. Gunsmoke 1955-1975, Marshall Matt Dillon keeps the peace in the rough and tumble Dodge City. One of most popular tv series of all time in a time of only three choices, still reverberating.

  3. Sorry, but what's so stunning about Matthew being a (somewhat) popular name? It's biblical, and all the countries listed are either European or ex-colonies of Europe, so it seems quite natural that it would do reasonably well on the list.

  4. Salut,
here is a link to a French counterpart of the babyname wizard (with cool stuff like trends by county and year) :

If you try it with "Matthieu" or "Mathieu", you'll see that this name is not very fashionable at the moment, but was hottest in the late 80s. Variants like "Mathias" are the rage at the moment on the other hand.
    à plus

  5. The Social Security database has year by year data on name popularity.

Our newest is Eleanor – still nicely far enough down the list not to have too many classmates with the same name.

Here in Kiwiland, "Isla" as girl's name seems contagious. Ekh.
