I have a different take on slides. I found it better to hand out copies of the slides and let them annotate them based on my comments. Writing is in itself an active learning tool, much better than (passively) reading what I wrote up for the students.
One further suggestion from my half-vast teaching career: when students would come to my office asking why I gave them a C, at first I would try to get them to understand what was missing in their paper. Later on I adopted a different tactic. I would ask them “Why did YOU give ME a C paper?” [That didn’t always work, either.]
