“Peeriodicals”: A new system of virtual journals

Brandon Stell writes:

The PubPeer Foundation will soon be launching a new scientific discussion project: “Peeriodicals”. As you will discover by following the link below, Peeriodicals are virtual journals with you as Editor-in-chief.

I love this idea, in part because it reminds me of my proposal to replace journals with recommender systems. The only post I can find on this is from 2017, but I’m pretty sure it came up a few years earlier.

In any case, I was just talk, and the PubPeer folks are actually doing something about it. What’s really cool here is how it’s all decentralized.

An example is this one on Anomaly Detection curated by Jordan Anaya. It makes sense for the peeriodical to have a theme rather than just being an unrelated collection of papers.

Stell writes that they will launch Peeriodicals today:

Researchers and institutions are questioning the monopolistic for-profit publishing model. The Peeriodicals platform democratizes many journal functions by removing all barriers to entry. Our hope is that researchers will exploit the flexibility of the platform to explore new ways of discovering, selecting and certifying research.

A couple of peeriodicals that we are particularly happy with can be found here:

The full list of peeriodicals will appear on the front page on Monday.
