UCLA undergraduate summer program in statistics

From June 17-24, UCLA will again host its Undergraduate Program in Statistics. A flyer for the program is available here. This week-long event is designed to introduce students to the
exciting challenges facing today’s “data scientists. For more information or for an application, please visit this web site.

The theme for this first meeting is visualization and
its role in the practice of statistics. Under this broad theme,
the program is organized around different application areas. The
topics include:

Bioinformatics and neuroscience
Earth and Space Science
Text and document analysis
Environmental Statistics

Statisticians from universities and research labs will lead
discussions and guide students through hands-on computer exercises,
illustrating the flow from exploratory analysis to methodological
and theoretical innovations.

The program is geared toward quantitatively-inclined college
sophomores and juniors who are considering graduate study.
Attendees will receive a grant to cover their travel expenses
as well as full room and board.

Applications are due April 14, 2006.

This program is made possible by a grant from the Institute
for Pure and Applied Mathematics at UCLA.
