Infographic of the year

This (by Frans Hofmeester) is excellent.

What really makes it work, I think, is that it goes slowly enough. 2 minutes and 45 seconds is enough time for me, as a viewer, to feel like I’m living through each stage of development. If the video were sped up to go from 0 to 12 in only 30 seconds, that would be cool in its own way but would give up the sense of local stability that is characteristic of development.

  1. That is wonderful. I also rather like the fact that it’s videos, not still pictures, and that they show her laughing and talking because it also underscores the fascinating development of facial expression.

Yes, the facial expressions are what I noticed too, the change from characteristic expressions of baby, 2-year-old, 4-year-old, etc. I was struck by how recognizable the different facial categories were, and how noticeable they were with the removal of the usual age cue of size. In that way, the movie has an aspects of a statistical graphic.

  2. I also like how the kid starts talking and speaks in different ways at various ages. You totally miss that in the picture-collage variations on this theme.
